A FREE event brought to you by the Mayor of Newham

The weekend kicked off with a spectacular carnival, involving more than 500 local school children, through the streets of the borough in a colourful costume parade.

There was also a variety of music and dance acts, activities for young ones, a funfair, sports, food and fashion in a preview of the celebrations and atmosphere that will be part of the 2012 games.

Newham Mayor, Sir Robin Wales, said "It was a wonderful opportunity for Newham to get together and celebrate the diversity of the borough:

"The Newham show continues to provide free entertainment for the whole family. It is a fantastic event which brings Newham together.

"We have London's most diverse borough and it's fantastic to see our residents gathering together year after year to celebrate what makes us unique.

"This year we had a special focus on my promises to the residents of Newham, and it's so pleasing to know residents were able to come down to Central Park and see how the council is working to make their borough better.

"Whether they wanted information on finding a job or to see how we're working to make their borough safer, tips on extra recycling, or to find out about the free summer activities we have on offer, residents could come to the show get the latest updates.

"It was definitely a wonderful family event with something for people of all ages to get involved in."

Visitors to the show were able to visit the healthy living area to get a free lifestyle assessment from the British Heart Foundation as well as a free health MOT from Newham NHS.

The Youth Creative Learning Marquee gave young people a place to go and learn more about a career in the creative industries. There was tips on designer hair and make-up, photojournalism information, computer games and live performances as well as free creative workshops from industry professionals at the nearby BBC Blast tent.

On the entertainment front, residents were able to enjoy a huge range of performances on offer from circus acts, aerialists, dancers and musicians at the cabaret tent, music lounge and dance stage.
